Trainer Development

The OCWTP collaborates with every new trainer entering its trainer pool to
develop an individualized trainer development plan comprised of activities
designed to address the trainer's specific developmental needs. These
activities include attending Training of Trainer (TOT) workshops and
Training on Content (TOC) workshops; acquiring field experience,
receiving individualized technical assistance with training design and
delivery; participating in the annual Trainer Event, and receiving
periodic information updates.

As a trainer matures and new needs are identified through the use of
trainer competencies, new activities are added to the trainer's
development plan to continue to hone the trainer's expertise and to
correct any areas in which the trainer has struggled.

Training of Trainer (TOT) Workshops:

The OCWTP offers a series of TOT workshops on a quarterly basis to help new and existing trainers develop and enhance specific trainer-related skills. The list of TOTs available is as follows:

So You Want to Be an OCWTP Trainer

This workshop provides an overview of the OCWTP's history and structure, the program requirements to become an OCWTP trainer, and the trainer's role within the OCWTP.

Attendance at this workshop is open to all new and prospective trainers.

Presentation Skills

This three-day workshop introduces trainers to the role of the trainer in a Comprehensive Competency-Based Inservice Training (CCBIT) system; the fundamentals of adult learning theory as they apply to inservice training; how cultural experiences impact training; transfer-of-learning strategies; and the variety of training methodologies and when best to use each. Trainers also learn how to be responsive to diverse learning styles; how to manage problem participants and participant resistance; and how to develop a training agenda. Finally, each trainer conducts a short training presentation which is critiqued by the class.

All approved trainers are required to complete this workshop before they begin training for the OCWTP.

Culture and Diversity

This four-day workshop is designed to develop trainers' self-awareness regarding their level of cultural competence and how their cultural framework, values, and beliefs may affect their training. In the workshop, trainers learn fundamental cultural concepts and how to apply them to child welfare practice and training. The workshop helps trainers to develop the skills needed to integrate relevant cultural content into their workshops and to manage emotionally provocative discussions regarding cultural differences, prejudices, racism, etc.

All approved trainers are required to complete this workshop within one year of beginning training for the OCWTP.

Curriculum Development

This two-day workshop prepares trainers to design and develop workshops by teaching them how to sequence content and design experiential exercises in concordance with adults' natural learning processes. Participants apply the concepts covered in the workshop to a workshop idea of their own, with the goal being to produce a rough-draft content outline for their own workshop by the end of the training.

Attendance at this workshop is open to all prospective or approved trainers on a space-available basis.

Transfer of Learning

This one-day workshop is designed to familiarize the trainer with transfer-of-learning (TOL) strategies; to explain the role of the training system in supporting transfer of learning; to instruct the trainer on the use of TOL strategies before, during, and after training; and to provide the trainer with an opportunity to practice the development and implementation of TOL strategies.

Attendance at this workshop is open to all prospective or approved trainers on a space-available basis.

PowerPoint

This one-day workshop teaches trainers how to engage and navigate the existing PowerPoint presentations used in standardized workshops, and the basics of how to create their own effective PowerPoint presentations for use in their specialized and related workshops.

Attendance at this workshop is open to all prospective or approved trainers on a space-available basis.

Classroom Performance System (CPS)

This one-day workshop instructs trainers on how to setup, engage, and navigate existing CPS databases in conjunction with existing PowerPoint presentations, as used in Core workshops and, time permitting, instructs trainers on how to create their own CPS questions and games for use in specialized and related workshops.

Attendance at this workshop is open to all prospective or approved trainers on a space-available basis.

Skill Building & Transfer Learning Lab

This learning lab is designed to help trainers develop and implement workshops that facilitate trainees' application of newly learned skills. The lab provides trainers an opportunity to learn new ideas through an exchange of information with other trainers; to practice and apply specific skill-building and transfer-of-learning strategies; and to strengthen their training designs to enhance efforts to support skill building and TOL. The lab includes two half-day sessions with time between to allow for completion of assignments and application of new skills. Class size is limited to 6-8 participants and lab facilitators.

Attendance at this workshop is open to all approved trainers on a space-available basis.

Training on Content (TOC) Workshops:

Trainers selected to train a standardized OCWTP workshop are required to attend a TOC on the workshop's content before being eligible to begin training the workshop. Trainers already training a standardized workshop are occassionally required to attend an additional TOC on the workshop when its content has undergone substantive revision.

Field Experience:

Trainers not currently working in the field of child welfare may be asked to participate in a field experience, typically comprised of spending several hours in a public child welfare agency shadowing a worker, interviewing staff and families, and/or participating in case-related meetings. Participation in a field experience is a requirement for all Caseworker and Supervisor/Manager Core trainers.

Trainers should not contact agencies directly to schedule field experience opportunities, but should coordinate field experience through their local RTC.

Technical Assistance:

Trainers are provided with a variety of technical assistance opportunities, including being paired with a mentor trainer to learn how to train standardized workshops; being observed and provided with feedback the first time a trainer trains; receiving subsequent observation and feedback to ensure quality control; and being provided with individualized technical assistance at a trainer's request.
